The International School of Panama operates under the license of the Ministry of Education of Panama and is accredited by AdvancED. As an authorized IB World School, we offer the International Baccalaureate Program (IB) for students in grades 11 and 12.  In addition, we offer the unique Innovation and Entrepreneurship Certificate and AdvancED certified STEM programs.

Position Summary

The school nurse is responsible for working in coordination with a colleague to provide first aid care for the day to day health care needs of the students and staff of ISP.  To support the instructional program by creating a climate of health and well-being in the school and by addressing the health needs of the school consistent with the goals set forth by the school administration and within the resources provided by the administration.

Organizational Accountabilities

ISP is committed to the health, safety and well-being of its students and staff.  ISP also expects staff to comply with its policy and procedures that relate to statutory requirements and best practices outlined, but not limited to the ISP Staff Handbook.  Of a particular importance are the policies related to Child Protection and Inclusion and Diversity.  Appointees are accountable for completing available training on these matters and ensuring that their knowledge, and the knowledge of their staff, is up to date.

Key Accountabilities and Competencies

  • Handle all medical emergency situations in an expeditious and effective manner.
  • Apply first aid to injuries as appropriate.
  • Interview and screen students who are ill.
  • Maintain communication with parents regarding injuries or illness and other pertinent medical information.  Contact emergency relief as necessary.
  • Maintain health files on all students, including emergency data.
  • Complete vision, hearing, and structural screening of students and make referrals for medical follow-up when indicated.
  • Present health related lessons to classes.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers and parents regarding student and faculty health needs and safety concerns.
  • Maintain effective communication in such health areas as disease control, immunization, and care and prevention techniques.
  • Provides support with school insurance in case of emergency.
  • Supports and provides medical coverage for after school activities and other school events as requested
  • Maintain adequate supplies to provide for relevant emergency health care.
  • Member of School Safety Committee assists with school bus inspections as requested.
  • Member of Child Study Team (CST) assists Resource Teacher with doctor-school-parent communication as requested.
  • Members of the Committee on Nutrition and provides assistance as requested.
  • Counsel with students regarding health education.
  • Supports school initiatives related to health and care.
  • Complete other relevant duties as assigned.

Requisitos:

Essentials Requirements:

  1. Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  2. BSN or Higher Degree
  3. Current nursing license
  4. Current CPR certification is required
  5. Interest in working with children/adolescents
  6. Ability to react quickly, calmly, and decisively in a crisis
  7. Ability to use clinic/medical equipment
  8. Basic pharmacological knowledge

Desirables Requirements:

At least 5 years of experience as school nursing or experience in independent practice
