The Chief of Maintenance is responsible for providing leadership, direction, planning, management and administration of complex facilities management, operations and maintenance functions within all Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) Facilities in the Republic of Panama. 

 

Major duties and responsibilities:

  • Keep  abreast  of,  develop  and  apply, facilities  maintenance  and  operations  techniques  that preserve the historic fabric of the facilities where applicable.
  • Manage and supervise, through subordinate supervisors, an organization composed of complex and varied functions (electricians, plumbers, technicians, mechanics, and roofing and masonry subcontractors, among others) and having a large staff performing building management, analytical, and technical work; skilled and unskilled work in different trades; contract administration; and clerical services.
  • Lead the Maintenance Division team to provide maintenance repairs, and preventive maintenance routines and tasks as requested by facilities users and the organization´s best practices within all facilities at STRI.
  • Provide management to the day-to-day operations of STRI’s vehicle and marine fleets for the ground and sea/lake transportation of staff members to the sites where STRI has operations in the Republic of Panama.
  • Keep excellent communication and coordination with the position’s direct supervisor as well with the Institution’s leadership and management teams in Panama and in the United States.
  • Solve issues within the workplace and align objectives with all necessary staff for the required tasks, while at the same time encouraging a culture of cordiality, respect, teamwork, and mutual support across offices.
  • Keep track of budget use, expenses, and financial needs. 
  • Provide management and execution follow up of maintenance projects (i.e. management of contracts, work teams, etc.) and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Keep adequate property controls for equipment use and for inventories and general supply reports.
  • Collaborate the Design and Construction department, by providing information/submittals review and technical expertise, guidance and cooperation during the installation of complex electro-mechanical systems and equipment for capital projects.

 

Requirements:

  • University degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Electromechanical, Industrial, or Civil Engineering, or related fields.
  •  Professional License issued by Panama´s “Junta Técnica de Ingeniería y Arquitectura” or a current Professional Engineer License issued by a state, district, or territory of the United States of America.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience working as facility manager, operations manager or similar activities in which the conservation, preservation and maintenance of facilities and properties represented one of the core functions.
  • Knowledge in the use of accounting software and processes and planning and general design (i.e. AutoCAD).
  • Experience in the use of Building Management Systems (BAS, Alarms), Commissioning of systems, and facilities management software.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, high initiative, diligence, and dedication to quality and safety.
  • Valid Driver's License issued by the Republic of Panama.
  • Ability to communicate with and relate to a wide range of people fluently in both English and Spanish (reading, writing, conversational) in a multicultural environment.
